It’s easy to forget that just one week ago we were flying high, talking about the best first half of a season for Sevilla, EVER. Then, a debacle of a match against Espanyol (admittedly with heavy team rotations), and then a sloppy showing at la Mestalla and the attitude has changed. Suddenly we are looking for answers with our confidence rattled.
This is further compounded by the medium term losses of Reyes, who had been in fine form, Tremoulinas, probably our most exciting defender when healthy, and now perhaps most damagingly Krychowiak. The Pole has been a solid rock for us in the middle of the pitch both in terms of dominating the ball and in terms of the amount of minutes we have relied on him to play. We will miss him severely and with Mbia still gone for a stretch we may be in trouble in the middle of the pitch.
This takes us to Thursday’s match against Espanyol. Can we come back and reverse the bad initial 1-3 away result?Absolutely. A 2-0 win in the RSP is well within our ability. And I’d love to see us do it. Although this team is also suddenly looking very thin and having just one game per week for the next two weeks might, in fact, be what the team needs if it doesn’t want to slip further behind Valencia for fourth place (the next two matches would be Jan 21 and Jan 28).
I’m going to be greedy and just hope we can continue to compete in and win everything, but the task looks very challenging at the moment and the team has lost some of the swagger we were all enjoying just one week ago.
