Sevilla v Atletico Madrid – Copa del Rey – Quarter Final 2nd Leg

Only one short week ago few would have expected to be coming into tonight’s encounter against Atletico Madrid on the back of two consecutive away wins, not to mention holding a one goal advantage. However that is exactly how things are, as last week’s brave performance and eventual 2-1 victory means that another semi-final Copa del Rey appearance is within touching distance.

Sevillistas have responded in their droves to the rallying cry from the club to sell out the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, and no wonder, as we all know fine well just how important a vociferous home support can be in matches of such high importance. The game has sold out, and as it so often is in Andalucia, tonight is a beautiful night for football in the city. A 21:30 kick off under clear skies and temperatures of around 13 C / 56 f will make for ideal playing conditions under the lights. On so many occasions we have successfully risen to this sort of challenge, can tonight be another?

Should we progress, it won’t come easy. That is guaranteed. Atletico will fight as only they know how. Expect lots of nasty tackles, dives, yellow and red cards aplenty. This could get ugly, and with guys like Diego Costa around, things invariably do. It would appear that he is not in their squad tonight however, but regardless, Diego Simone has assembled one of the fiercest and ruthless teams in modern football history. It will take a brave and strong Sevilla to see off their threat tonight. Added to that is the return of ex-Sevillistas Gameiro and Vitolo, the latter is sure to receive a hostile reception after his ignominious departure after apparently signing a new contract with us last summer. Gameiro and Griezmann are due to start, so it is clear they will be going all out for goals from the first whistle.

The starting XI is in, and once again, and unchanged team! Three games in a row… that must be a new record? Fatigue could become an issue, but with so much at stake, adrenaline should see any struggling players through. Should it go to extra time however, that would be a different matter. Muriel ran himself into the ground at Español, and capped his performance with a wonderful solo effort. More of the same please young man!

Atletico are one of the few teams I have never seen us beat at home in the flesh. A 0-0 draw and a 0-3 defeat have left a bitter taste in my mouth. However tonight a draw would do just fine for us.

Score prediction 2-2

¡VAMOS MI SEVILLA!

  1. Ouch Navas playing RB scares me. N’zonzi and Mercado are going to be key helping him out.

  2. ShendM says:

Why can’t we get a goalkeeper on loan and loan out Soria (if there’s not interest in keeping him, which is wrong imo).

  3. Rico coming up huge

  4. What a save by Rico that was awesome. Totally missed the goal!

Atletico scum baiting us into yellows.

  5. Sarabia!!!

well deserved. couldn’t tell, did that take a deflection?

bye bye atleti. you won’t be missed.

  7. Big shoutout to Jesus Navas… he has been amazing at right full back!

  8. 3-1

    5-2 global

    Suck on that Betis

  9. well that was fun! not sure I’ll be able to get to sleep now though!

Very interesting how things changed quickly within less than 2 weeks. If this is the Sevilla that we’ll be watching until at least the end of the season, then sign me up for it!

  11. Exacto, Preciso

  12. Biris should have showed up at the training grounds weeks prior.

  13. Book your tickets to Kiev now, boys. Montella is taking us to the top!

  14. How about a big FU to Vitolo tambien! Left for bigger and better things. Only one team is still in Champions League and Copa Del Rey and he can’t even find the pitch in an important tie.

Best chant of the game, after we went 3-1

“Bring on Vitolo, Cholo bring on Vitolo”

The often denied “engineered” R madrid v Barca final is dead yet again.:grinning:

Really enjoyed watching those two games tonight, well done to Leganes, two great goals to put out R Madrid. Serves the arrogants’ right for playing what was close to a a second-string 11 in a quarter final. I’m now hoping that PSG can kick them out of the CL and leave them with nothing. Florentino Pérez will not be happy tonight :joy::joy::joy::grinning:

Alaves rode their luck and put up a good fight, but just couldn’t quite make it count against Valencia.

I don’t know if it was his haircut, but Navas looked different at RB. He looked more mature in his game and very poised. It’s as if he was meant to play there. Should we still go after Aleix now? Like DDA mentinoned, he should’ve tried it 5yrs ago.

Sarabia looking like what we seen from him last season in terms of end product. On course for another 10 & 10 season. Was always dangerous when he moved infield.

Interesting to see what Montella does vs Getafe. The continuity of that starting XI was much needed though. I just hope it doesn’t send the wrong message to WBY, but only makes it fresher. It’s also the only way i see Mudo getting better. He seemed more effective once the game broke open, so it’s steps in the right direction i guess.

Can’t wait for the draw tomorrow. At this stage, i don’t care who we get; the players & fans will be amped. Personally, i’d like Valencia for a little revenge, and to put a dent in their morale for the 2nd half of the season.

    ¡VAMOS MUCHACHOS!

  18. ShendM says:

If we shift Navas back to RB, we still might need a RW to cover for Sarabia. Corchia is there in the mixt for RB also, but it would be a fatal mistake shifting Mercado back to RB, ever. Mercado’s career should end at the CB position, and as long as Sampaoli is the coach of Argentina, he will be called up and play in his 3-5-2 as a right CB. Only Berizzo was stubborn enough not to shift Mercado to CB. He’s a beast at CB, while a chicken at RB (mostly because of his lack of pace).

It’s always better to have 4 solutions for a particular wing. At the left we have Correa, Nolito, Escudero and Arana/Carole. At the right we have Sarabia, Navas, Corchia… ideally Vidal would be included in the mix, hopefully.

  19. ShendM says:

We’ll face Leganes in the Semis. Not bad, considering we dodged Barca and Valencia. It would’ve been much better to face Valencia and sink their morale as suggested above, but I guess it will be up to Barca to do that.

Leganes should be taken seriously though, so that we can avoid unpleasant surprises.

  20. Darren says:

Avoiding Barca is a positive I guess. But either way we will probably have to beat the to win the CDR.

Should be able to beat Leganes but as ShendM says, we can’t take them lightly. They just knocked out RM and their confidence in this comp would be sky high.

  21. The cup doesn’t interest me normally until we get to a final then I want to win it. But I’m already up for this one.

  22. Mark_L says:

A fantastic win! To beat atletico over 2 legs is tough to do. We beat them home and away and it shows that we do have a quality and a good team.

We just need to keep this pattern of play and keep playing with this passion. If we can get a few reinforcements in, it will strengthen us, for the challenges ahead.

We got lucky drawing leganes in the semi. A huge opportunity to get to the final. Plus we still got the CL last 16 to look forward too.

Despite the downs, we still in 3 comps and we still have an outside chance of top 4. We need to go on a run now!

Still let’s hope for exciting times ahead and that we settling under montella and we can have a strong 2nd half of season

  23. Valencia have lost 4 of their last 6 league games.
