A wonderful little moment occurred on Monday this week for literalists and dorks. In fact, it was a whole wonderful little 90 minute-long moments. It was the Levante – Las Palmas matchup, which, curiously is a complete sentence in Spanish all unto its own (and definitely something neutrals were doing when it actually turned into a great match). What does this mean for Sevilla? Well, we aren’t very useful in a sentence, but we have won every home match since November 3rd. Seriously, Sevilla have won 3 and a half months of them (facing Real Madrid, Athletic, Valencia and Juventus in that span). That’s a pretty great sentence for Sevilla to be in, guys!
Levante has been on their best run of the season lately having lost only three of their last five instead of their usual five. More importantly, the other two were actually wins (!) over fellow bottom 5 friends Rayo and Las Palmas (!), which has to make life back on the eastern shore feel good for Giuseppe Rossi, who one assumes just showed up at Levante’s trainings grounds last week and was immediately signed to a contract on a Carrefour receipt that happened to blow by at that moment (it looks like he’s on loan from Fiorentina, but I like that image too much to delete).
We sit with our now familiar bewildered hopefulness with which we wait each week for Emery to select a squad that includes all of Ever Banega, Kevin Gameiro, and Yevhen Konoplyanka on the field at the same exact moment. The combination has been rumored to cause the host to break out in goals but has been so infrequently tested that we can only set up a perimeter around the area it is known to occur (the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán) and wait to catch it in its natural habitat. With Vitolo serving a suspension for those (absurd) two yellows from El Calderón, there’s no reason we shouldn’t see both K-men up there charging hard at the Levante net. Mr. Banega may be nursing a small injury as he was held out of our midweek Copa win at Mirandés but should be available this weekend unless he’s off courting a contract from somewhere in Italy.
Anything short of three points is a disaster this weekend. Let’s knock Levante off their 2 out of 5 win streak! ¿Levante? ¡No! ¡Baje!
