Every damn year I forget about the weird international break that comes after a summer full of international games and just 2 weeks into the season, and every season I feel confused and annoyed about it. Club leagues start back again today, though, and they do so with a bang: Arsenal – City was already a fantastic game, and in La Liga Barcelona and Athletic square off in a match that has often been quite entertaining, and the later the Madrid derby happens, so if you like defense and physicality, stay tuned.
But of course the main course on this weekend’s delicious menu is Getafe’s visit to the RSP. Sevilla improved on the disappointing home opening draw with Valencia by winning at Espanyol, a pair of results that sees our heroes undefeated and in 5th place at this stage of the season. Obviously being in Europa League position in week 2 is completely irrelevant, but what isn’t irrelevant is getting every point you can early in the season. A home meeting with Getafe qualifies in my mind as a good time to get all three points–I’d consider anything less a disappointment. Sevilla still seems to be finding their footing with their new look, but there have been enough flashes of brilliance (and, let’s face it, Bacca) to suggest that we may see some great things this season. These early games should continue to be by turns both fascinating and frustrating as the team develops an identity and motive in possession without Rakitic.
So let’s all meet here Sunday to see the next step in the evolution process, and hopefully to savor another three points and nother week undefeated!
