Back in August when the Liga schedule was released, I was pleased to see that we started with a relatively soft first 5 games. Of course at that point we didn’t know what our CL schedule would look like once we beat Braga and qualified for that tournament (ah, August! Such beautiful, innocent times), but it seemed to me that in La Liga we started with 5 very winnable games, and then we played our first really tough game of the year against a quality opponent in week 6, against Atlético. Well August didn’t go like we’d imagined, and then September didn’t, either. But now here we are in October, and even though we haven’t started the year the way anyone would have hoped, this game is still our first really strong test in La Liga against a top-tier team. It also happens to be our new coach’s debut, and furthermore it finds us in danger of losing touch with the lead pack despite the fact that we’ve played a softer start than any of the bigger teams in the league. So for all of those reasons…we should win.
Atleti is kind of good of late, and they’ve had some excellent form as well. Kün is sitting today, which is sort of a bummer because he’s so good and fun to watch play with Forlán…but it’s also sort of the best news ever, given how badly we need this game and that we’re not in the best form of our lives over here.
I don’t usually do predictions, but what the heck: I think we’ll tie this one 2-2. Match starts this morning at 11 EST. Stop on by to e-cheer the team on their way to proving me wrong in a 4-0 romp.
