With things unbelievably slow and boring during the international break, just figured I’d post a quick update on our junior team’s early days in the Segunda.
But first, if you haven’t made your predictions for next season yet, do it! We are contemplating offering a prize to the winner…. A Sevilla jersey? A stylish Monchi’s Men t-shirt to impress all of your friends and make all the ladies swoon? I can’t divulge yet, but info is forthcoming.
Back to our youth squad. It’s been a mixed debut for them. On the encouraging side they’ve had three matches and taken points from all three. They absolutely appear to belong in this division and have managed to score 5 goals in 3 games with some strong appearances by many players (I believe that Borja Lasso and Cotan have been the standouts).
But at the same time, they’ve tied all three matches. And for different reasons, each one was a bit agonizing and heart wrenching in its own unique way.
In the first match against Girona, they had a 3-0 lead until being scored on in the 72nd minute. They then allowed two injury time goals to steal away their first shot at 3 points of the season slip away.
In their second match, away at Tenerife, they went ahead in the 19th minute following a goal by Cotan. But two minutes later Ivi received a straight red and had them playing down a man for the next 70+ minutes. They finally conceded in the 68th minute but hung on for the point.
Yesterday, against fellow recent promotees UCAM Murcia, the script was switched. They went up a man in the 56th minute, but conceded in the 74th. A Carrillo goal did pull us back even, but we were unable to get the next needed goal for the full three points.
The results themselves aren’t terrible. Realistically, this team will be battling all season to stay out of the relegation zone. But not getting even a single win out of these three matches is pretty disappointing. Although they will finish the jornada out of the relegation zone, averaging just one point per game for the season would be a recipe for certain descent back to the Segunda B. Hopefully they’re not feeling too frustrated and can start accumulating some wins soon.
