There are several interesting trends to examine in the lead-up to today’s Liga matchup with Getafe. Gameiro’s form, questions about midfield, Sevilla’s chances of catching 4th place, how the mid-week Europa League matchup impacts lineup decisions (if there is in fact any chance of qualifying directly for the Champions League), and so on. But to be honest, the only factor that truly matters in today’s game is: can Sevilla win away from home in La Liga? It’s old news at this point, but the numbers are still, to me, staggering: 0 wins, 8 draws, and 5 losses this season. Only 9 goals managed in 13 games, which explains the –7 goal differential. The numbers are even more shocking when compared to home form: 11–0–2, 28 goals scored, and a GD of +16. Those are the numbers of relegated and Champions League teams, respectively.
Sevilla takes its miserable road record to perpetual mid-table side Getafe today, the 2nd lowest remaining team they play away for the rest of the season. I’ll say that again: other than Sporting Gijon next month, none of the remaining away Liga games Sevilla plays this year (at Real Madrid, Valencia, Espanyol, Athletic) will be against a team as low as 16th place Getafe today. All of those games are winnable, but today is a great chance to avoid an entire season of away form futility.
Are Emery and his men up to it? Should we load up for this game with top talent, Basel be damned, in order to stop this embarrassing trend? What say you? Say it in the comments while we await kickoff, and then join us here at game time for commentary and commiseration.
